Parlor Hyotan | A Homely Diner That Cooks Your Catch in Sarahama (Irabu, Miyako)

Sponsored
Parlor Hyotan is a homely diner and parlour loved by locals in Ikemazoe in the Sarahama area of Irabu Island. At lunch, Miyako soba and set meals are popular, and in the evening the izakaya menu is full too. After 20:00 it operates by reservation. Its greatest appeals are the owner's special kimchi and a service of cooking fish you have caught on the spot. If tourists bring fish they have caught, it will be cooked to your preference: sashimi, simmered, fried, Chinese-style, Korean-style and more (dinner only, advance contact required). You can also taste Korean and Chinese dishes by a chef from Korea, and besides Japanese it handles English, Korean and Chinese. It reopened renewed in September 2023 and is still operating energetically. Near Sarahama Port, it is a shop where you can enjoy the island's home-style flavour along with the charm of a fishing port.

Visiting tips & what to bring

As it is a small diner including outdoor seats, advance phone booking is recommended for groups or large numbers. If you want your caught fish cooked, advance contact is essential. The parking space is limited to a few cars, so when full, take care with roadside parking nearby. The Sarahama area has many slopes and narrow lanes, so easy-to-walk footwear is reassuring when walking. As the closing days are irregular, confirming the operating status on X/Instagram (@parahyotan) or by phone before visiting is reliable.

For families with small children

It is a homely diner with a raised tatami area and tables, with a home-style atmosphere, a relatively easy shop to enter even with children aged 0 to 6. There are easy-to-eat menu items for children such as Miyako soba and set meals. However, as it is a small shop, entry with a pushchair or breastfeeding/nappy-change space is hard to expect, and consideration is needed when crowded. Booking by phone in advance secures a seat for peace of mind.
