Birdsong in the Morning, Mangroves Right in Front When You Step onto the Veranda
When I saw the words "a detached villa surrounded by a lagoon" on the booking screen, honestly it didn't click. What's a lagoon? An inlet? What's so amazing about that? — with that feeling, I booked lightly just from the photos, thinking "well, it looks pretty."
I was looking for a villa on Irabu Island and had a few candidates, but I was drawn to the blue water and mangrove scenery in Villaze's photos and wondered "where is this shot from?"
Actually going, I understood. The surroundings are all lagoon. It's built atop a cliff, and looking down, a lagoon spreads out, mangroves grow, and you're surprised — "huh, there's terrain like this?"
And at night, spending time quietly in the room, what I heard was a splashing sound. At first I thought "what sound? rain?" but no. It was the sound of fish leaping.
Thinking "a hotel where you hear the sound of fish, what's that," I opened the window, and at high tide fish had come into the lagoon and were really leaping. At this moment, I thought "this is an amazing place."
In the morning I wake to birdsong, step onto the veranda and mangroves spread before me, crabs walking all over, and I get the feeling "is this really Japan?" I've come to Okinawa many times, but this is my first time with an environment like this.
In this article, I'll write all of Villaze's appeal that I found from actually staying 3 nights. The special environment surrounded by a lagoon, the freedom unique to a whole-building rental, how to enjoy BBQ and fishing, and including my failures, honestly.
A Stay Where You Feel the Sound of Leaping Fish and the Wind
The first thing I struggled with arriving at Villaze was that the place is really hard to find. Even with Google Maps, I got anxious many times — "is this the right road?"
Going deeper and deeper into a residential area, around when I started to think "am I lost?", I saw a small sign. But from there it was hard to find again, and I passed it about twice. In the end, seeing another car go in, I realised "ah, it's here."
The moment I arrived and was shown the building by the owner, "amazing…" slipped out. It's built atop a cliff, the surroundings all lagoon, mangroves spreading. I've never seen terrain like this in Japan.
Entering the room, the living-dining is wide, with sliding doors that fully open. The moment I opened those doors, a pleasant wind came in, and I was convinced — "ah, so this is the meaning of the name Villaze (the wind that pours onto the villa)."
Open the windows fully and the wind really passes through. A wind so pleasant you might not need the aircon, and I thought "this is addictive."
And at night, spending time quietly, what I heard was the sound of leaping fish. There's a splashing sound, and at first I thought "what?" but the owner taught me "at high tide the fish come into the lagoon. You can hear the leaping sound, right?" and I got excited — "so that's it!"
When I actually stepped onto the veranda to look, the fish really were leaping. I could see them flash in the moonlight, and I thought "no other hotel has this."
In the morning I wake to the chirping of small birds. Not a city alarm, but waking to birdsong — I learned for the first time how pleasant this is.
Stepping onto the veranda, crabs walk among the mangroves, fish leap now and then, and I drank coffee thinking "to be able to see this view every morning is too luxurious." This became my daily morning routine.

Basic Information on Villaze Irabu Island | A Rare Location Surrounded by a Lagoon
Villaze is short for "the wind of Villa Irabu," and true to the name, the wind is just so pleasant. This is a goodness you can't understand without actually staying, I think.
The location is surrounded by the lagoon (inlet) running between Irabu Island and Shimojishima, apparently a rare terrain even within Japan. The surroundings are enclosed by cliffs, so the sense of privacy is insane. You can truly feel "disturbed by no one."
About 30–40 minutes by car from Miyako Airport. There's a large AEON supermarket on the way, so dropping by before check-in to buy ingredients and then going is recommended. I did that too, and I'd seen info beforehand that "there's free preserving ice," and it really was there, which helped. You can also procure BBQ ice here.
I heard it's closer from Shimojishima Airport, but I went from Miyako Airport, so I enjoyed shopping and stopping at cafes along that route. If you're not in a hurry, going while making detours is good too.
Check-in is 15:00–20:00, check-out 10:00. The same time band as an ordinary hotel, so it's easy to plan.
Being a whole-building rental, the entire building is yours alone. You don't see other guests, and you can spend it freely without minding the time. There's none of the worry of "the next room's sound…" or "the breakfast time…".
The building is also new, clean and beautiful. The mangrove and river view seen from the living room is the best, and at night, weather permitting, you can see a sky full of stars. When I stayed, the night sky was packed with stars, and I genuinely thought "more beautiful than a planetarium." I saw shooting stars many times too, becoming so absorbed I forgot even to make a wish.
The Freedom of a Whole-Building Rental | Spending It Condominium-Style
The good thing about a whole-building rental is, above all, being able to spend it freely, I think. At a hotel you inevitably mind "not bothering other guests," but here there's none of that at all.
The living-dining is wide, with a comfortable sofa, and the wind comes in from the fully opening sliding doors. Opening these doors fully and spending time playing your favourite music was the best.
A review said "in the daytime you can blast music outside with no problem at all," and I thought "really?" but it was true. With no buildings around, playing music bothers no one. I didn't go that wild, but I spent it relaxedly playing my favourite music.
The kitchen is a simple kitchen, with a stove, fridge and microwave. Seasonings are in place too, so you can buy ingredients at the supermarket and self-cater. "Huh, even seasonings?" I was surprised at first, but basics like salt, soy sauce and oil were there.
I made just breakfast myself and did BBQ at night, and this balance was just right. Eating out every meal is tiring, and self-catering everything has no travel feel, so this much is just right.
Plenty of towels are prepared, there's insect repellent, everything is there. I'd worried "is anything missing?" but there wasn't at all. The minimum to bring is fine.
The bathroom has a jet bath where you can heal a tired body. Getting in after playing in the sea, you feel "revived." Soak slowly in the hot water and sleep thinking "I'll play tomorrow too."
The bedroom is comfortable too, and I slept soundly until morning. Waking to birdsong feels good. Completely different from waking to an alarm, the sensation of "waking naturally" was fresh.
Being a whole-building rental, after check-in you're disturbed by no one. Even spending all day in loungewear, you don't have to mind anyone's eyes. This freedom is, I think, the biggest appeal of a whole-building rental.
The Appeal of the Lagoon | Enjoying Fishing, Kayaking and BBQ
Villaze's backyard has a private pool and a lagoon. The pool gets great sun from morning to evening, with a parasol and hammock too, so you can spend all day here.
I swam in the pool in the morning, napped in the hammock at noon, and swam again in the evening — a luxurious way to spend time. There were no mosquitoes and it was comfortable. I'd worried "is there insect repellent?" but I hardly got bitten by mosquitoes.
But Villaze's real appeal is, I think, the lagoon. Rent a fishing rod and fish in the lagoon. This is fun.
The owner teaches you how to fish, politely telling you "this is the spot to aim for," "this time band is good." When I actually caught a fish, I was happy — "yes! caught one!"
And they fillet the fish you caught on the spot, and you eat it at the BBQ. This is supremely delicious. Thinking "I'm eating a fish that was swimming until just now," the freshness is completely different.
A review said the BBQ add-on option is "an absolute must," and it's truly so. Cheap with plenty of quantity and taste to enjoy, and the BBQ at dusk was the best.
A BBQ while feeling the sound of leaping fish, birdsong and the flowing wind is completely different from an ordinary BBQ. Thinking "this is exactly how to enjoy Irabu Island," I enjoyed the BBQ with a beer in hand.
You can rent a kayak too, usable throughout your stay. Paddling the lagoon by kayak and exploring among the mangroves. This was fun too.
There are loads of crabs, fish leap now and then, and you feel "becoming one with nature." It's an experience you can absolutely never taste in the city. Seeing the mangrove roots up close, watching crabs scuttle sideways, I thought anew "nature is amazing."

The Surrounding Environment and Nature | A World of Mangroves and Crabs
Villaze's surroundings are a world of mangroves and lagoon. In the morning, step onto the veranda and mangroves spread out, with crabs walking among them.
Red crabs, blue crabs, crabs of various colours, and I was surprised "there are this many crabs." At first I could only see a few, but watching steadily, more and more come out. 20, 30, too many to count, and I thought "it's a crab paradise."
The scenery is completely different at high tide and low tide. At high tide it's full of water, fish come in, and there's a splashing sound. At low tide the water recedes, the mangrove roots show, and lots of crabs come out.
Just watching this change is fun. You can see completely different scenery depending on the time band, so you don't get bored. I came to mind "what time is it now? high tide? low tide?" and became conscious of the tides.
At night it's pitch dark and the stars are packed in. With no streetlights, the starry sky is truly beautiful. The Milky Way is clearly visible too, and I saw shooting stars many times. I'm moved that "this many stars are visible." A starry sky you can absolutely never see in the city.
I'm not at all knowledgeable about constellations, but I had fun looking up at the night sky, searching "is that Cassiopeia?"
There are many kinds of birds too, and in the morning various birds sing. I don't know what birds, but they sing in beautiful voices, and I thought "a natural alarm clock is the best." Far better than a clock alarm.
The wind is pleasant too. True to the name Villaze (the wind that pours onto the villa), a truly pleasant wind blows. Open the windows fully and enjoy the fusion with the natural wind surrounded by mangroves. This is, I think, the real pleasure of Villaze.
There's an aircon too, but I hardly used it. The wind is pleasant, so just having the windows open was enough. Thinking "so this is nature's coolness," drinking beer in the night breeze was the best.
Who Villaze Suits and Who It Doesn't
From actually staying, there are people I think it suits and people I think it might not suit, so I'll write honestly. Before booking, I want you to check whether you're suited.

People It Suits
People who love nature definitely suit it. Mangroves, lagoon, birdsong, the sound of fish. For people who want to spend time surrounded by nature, it's the best environment. People who think "I want to become one with nature" — this is the only place.
People who want to spend it quietly suit it too. Being a whole-building rental, you're disturbed by no one. Perfect for people who want to spend it quietly and leisurely. Recommended for people who think "I want to get away from the hustle."
People who like BBQ and fishing will undoubtedly enjoy it. Fish in the lagoon and eat the fish you caught at the BBQ. For outdoor lovers it's the best environment. I was a fishing beginner too, but I could enjoy it because the owner taught me.
People who want to spend it freely suit it. You can spend it at your own pace without minding the time. Sleep in, stay up late, play music — no one says anything. This freedom is nice.
People who want a long stay suit it too. There's a kitchen, and apparently a washing machine, so it's perfect for a long stay like a week. I thought "I'd like to spend about a month here."
People who want to stay as a family or group are recommended too. You can use the whole building, so it's ideal for staying as a family or group. Everyone can have lively fun.
People who want to see the stars are absolutely recommended. At night you can see a sky full of stars. For starry-sky lovers it's the best environment. I didn't go aiming for the stars, but the starry sky was so beautiful it moved me.
People It Doesn't Suit
People who want to eat out might find it a bit inconvenient. There's about one place within walking distance, and a few in an area about 5 minutes by car. For people who mainly eat out, it's inconvenient. But including that, there's "the fun of making it yourself," so it didn't bother me.
People who want a luxury resort don't suit it. It's simple and comfortable, but there's no opulence like a luxury resort hotel. It's a place to enjoy nature. People who seek "a sense of luxury" might be better off at another hotel.
People without a car will find it tough. A rental car is essential. Without a car, travel is hard. If asked "can I go without a car?", I'd answer "impossible."
People who dislike insects might want to think a bit. Being surrounded by mangroves, there are insects. However, there were reviews that there are few mosquitoes, and I wasn't bitten by mosquitoes either. There's insect repellent too, so I think it's fine, but it doesn't suit people for whom insects are an absolute no.
People who like lively places might find it lacking. Being a quiet environment, it doesn't suit people who like lively places. People who think "I want to play in the entertainment district at night" are better off elsewhere.
Sightseeing Spots Around Villaze
Around Villaze there are many of Irabu Island's popular sightseeing spots. Since you're staying, I hope you'll enjoy the nearby sightseeing too. I'll introduce the places I actually went.
About 5 Minutes by Car to Nakanoshima Beach
Nakanoshima Beach is a very popular beach as a snorkelling point on Irabu Island, about 5 minutes by car from Villaze. Close.
The transparency is high, with lots of colourful tropical fish. If you're going to snorkel, it's definitely here. I swam at Nakanoshima Beach in the morning, relaxed at the Villaze pool at noon, and BBQ'd at night — a perfect day.
There are many kinds of fish too, and I got excited "ah, there's Nemo!" and looked up "what's this fish?" — it was fun. I think it's a beach even snorkelling beginners can enjoy.
About 15 Minutes by Car to 17END
17END is the tip of the Shimojishima Airport runway, a place where you can see an incredibly beautiful sea. About 15 minutes by car from Villaze.
Going at low tide, the shallow sea spreads out and the emerald-green sea is beautiful. You can see planes taking off and landing too, so it's popular as a photo spot. I went in the evening and shot the sunset and a plane together.
However, you can't see the beautiful sea unless it's low tide, so checking the tide table before going is recommended. Go at high tide and you'll think "huh? different from what I expected," so be careful.
About 10 Minutes by Car to Toguchi-no-Hama
Toguchi-no-Hama is Irabu Island's most famous beach, characterised by pure-white sand and highly transparent sea. About 10 minutes by car from Villaze.
If you want to relax on a beach, Toguchi-no-Hama is recommended. The sand is fine and beautiful, the sea transparent, and you think "I want to stay here forever." Bringing a parasol and relaxing all day on the beach is good too.
About 15 Minutes by Car to the Irabu Bridge
The Irabu Bridge is Japan's longest toll-free bridge at 3,540 metres. About 15 minutes by car from Villaze.
The view from atop the bridge is beautiful, and it's popular as a drive course. Especially in the evening the sunset is beautiful, and it's recommended for photography too. I drove in the evening and saw the sunset from atop the bridge. So beautiful I stopped the car and took photos.
About 5 Minutes by Car to Sawada-no-Hama
Sawada-no-Hama is a beach chosen among Japan's 100 Best Shores, about 5 minutes by car from Villaze. Close.
Large rocks are strewn about, where you can enjoy a distinctive scenery. It's also famous as a spot with a beautiful sunset. I went in the evening and shot the sunset visible between the rocks. You can take Instagram-worthy photos.
About 30 Minutes by Car to AEON Miyakojima Shopping Center
AEON Miyakojima Shopping Center is between Miyako Airport and Villaze, about 30 minutes by car.
If you're buying ingredients or daily goods, here is convenient. There's free preserving ice too, so you can procure BBQ ice here. Dropping by before check-in to buy ingredients and drinks and then going is recommended.
I dropped by before going too and bought BBQ meat, vegetables, drinks, breakfast bread and so on. The range is good and it was convenient.

An Ideal 3-Night, 4-Day Plan Spent at Villaze
Let me introduce the 3-night, 4-day plan I actually spent. I'd be glad if it's a reference. I'll write honestly, including failures.
Day 1: Arrival, Shopping and a Failure Story
Arrive at Miyako Airport in the afternoon, rent a car, and first shop at AEON. Buy ingredients, drinks, ice and BBQ ingredients. What I failed at here was thinking "ice is free so a little is fine" and buying only a little.
I arrived at Villaze around 3:30, so I checked in and spent it relaxedly. The owner explained politely, saying "the fishing rod and kayak are usable anytime."
In the evening I swam in the pool, and at night BBQ. I hadn't fished yet, so BBQ with the ingredients the owner prepared. This was delicious. But the ice ran low, the drinks went warm, and I regretted "I should have bought more."
At night I saw the starry sky and made plans for "what to do from tomorrow." The sky full of stars was so beautiful I forgot to plan and was absorbed in watching.
Day 2: Nakanoshima Beach, Fishing and a Failure Story
In the morning, snorkelling at Nakanoshima Beach. The transparency was high, lots of fish, and I thought "the best" many times. But I failed here too. I forgot to apply sunscreen and my back went bright red. At night I regretted "ouch, it hurts."
At noon I went back to Villaze and relaxed in the pool. Napping in the hammock, I felt "there's no time more luxurious than this."
In the evening, fishing in the lagoon. Taught by the owner, I was happy when I caught a fish. But at first I couldn't catch anything and thought "this is hard," then the owner demonstrated "you throw it like this," and I finally caught one.
At night I ate that fish at the BBQ and was moved "so fresh." I learned for the first time how delicious it is to eat a fish you caught yourself.
Day 3: 17END, Toguchi-no-Hama and a Failure Story
In the morning I went to 17END and saw the beautiful sea. But I failed here too. I went without checking the low-tide time, and it was high tide, so I thought "huh? different from what I expected."
Still, the sea was beautiful, so I took lots of photos. But I regretted "I should have come at low tide."
At noon I relaxed at Toguchi-no-Hama. Lying on the sand, I tasted "the luxury of doing nothing." Here I applied sunscreen properly. I'd learned.
In the evening I went back to Villaze and explored the lagoon by kayak. Paddling among the mangroves and seeing crabs was fun. It was my first kayak, but it was unexpectedly easy and I thought "this is fun."
At night, the last BBQ. The most exciting of the 3 days. The owner chatted a little too, telling me "recommended spots on Irabu Island."
Day 4: Check-out and Sightseeing
In the morning I got up slowly and made and ate breakfast. Being the last morning, I drank coffee slowly on the veranda, looked at the mangroves, and thought "I'll definitely come again."
Check-out is 10:00, so I spent it relaxedly until then. When I said "thank you" to the owner, they said with a smile "we'll be waiting for you again," which made me happy.
After check-out, I dropped by Sawada-no-Hama, crossed the Irabu Bridge, and went back to Miyako Island. I headed to the airport thinking "I'll definitely come again."
Conversation Episodes with the Owner
Villaze's owner is truly kind and taught me all sorts of things. Let me introduce the conversations that stayed with me.
At check-in, I was asked "is it your first time?" and when I answered "yes, first time," they taught me "since it's surrounded by a lagoon, at high tide you can hear the sound of fish leaping. If you stay quiet at night you can hear it."
That night I really heard it and was moved "just as the owner said."
During fishing too, they politely taught me "this area is the spot to aim for," "this time band is good," and when I said "I'm a fishing beginner," they encouraged me "it's fine, it's easy."
And when I caught a fish, they responded right away "congratulations! I'll fillet it," and I was moved "they're this kind."
At the BBQ too, they taught me in detail "adjust the fire like this," "don't overcook these vegetables," and I thought "even a BBQ beginner can relax."
On the last morning, I was asked "how was it?" and when I answered "it was the best. I'll definitely come again," they said "thank you. Next time please spend it even more slowly," and I thought "next time I want to stay about a week."
Failure Stories and Points to Note
Let me write the failure stories and points to note that I found from actually staying. For people going from now, I want you to be careful not to make the same mistakes.
Buy plenty of ice
Just because there's free ice, buying only a little leaves you short. If you plan to BBQ, buying plenty is good. I bought too little and regretted it.
Sunscreen is essential
If playing in the sea, sunscreen is essential. I forgot to apply it and my back went bright red. It hurt. I want you to apply it without fail.
Go to 17END at low tide
Going to 17END at low tide is recommended. At high tide you can't see the shallow sea. Checking the tide table before going is good.
The place is hard to find
Even with Google Maps, it's hard to find. Be careful not to miss the sign. If you pass it, you just go back, so search without panicking.
Buy ingredients in advance
There's no supermarket or convenience store nearby, so shopping at AEON before going is good. Even if something's missing, you can't go buy it right away.
Use insect repellent
Being surrounded by mangroves, it's best to use insect repellent. There's insect repellent in the room, so I want you to use it.
Kayaking is unexpectedly easy
Even a kayak beginner can do it unexpectedly easily. I want you to try it without fear. It's fun.
Timing matters for fishing
Timing matters for fishing. It's best to ask the owner. They'll teach you.
The pool isn't heated
The pool isn't heated, so it might be cold in winter. In summer it's no problem.
Check the Wi-Fi
It's best to check in advance whether there's Wi-Fi. If you plan to check work email and the like, checking is essential.
Special Time Surrounded by a Lagoon
What I thought from staying 3 nights at Villaze is that "I could spend special time surrounded by a lagoon." Quiet time surrounded by nature, that you can absolutely never taste in the city. The sound of leaping fish, birdsong, the sound of the wind. All of it is pleasant.
The scenery changes at high tide and low tide, showing completely different faces depending on the time band. Just watching this change is fun. I came to mind "what time is it now?" and pay attention to the tides.
Surrounded by mangroves, with crabs walking, I thought anew "nature is amazing." Watching the crabs' movements steadily, I'm surprised "there are this many kinds."
The night sky is unforgettable too. The Milky Way clearly visible, shooting stars flowing many times, I was moved "this many stars are visible." More beautiful than a planetarium.

Being a whole-building rental, you can spend it at your own pace. Being able to spend it leisurely without minding the time is the best. I spent it forgetting time so much I forgot "what time is check-out again?"
BBQ, fishing, kayaking — all of it was fun. Especially eating the fish you caught at the BBQ is an experience you can't taste elsewhere. I thought "I've never eaten fish this fresh."
I was happy the owner was kind and taught me all sorts of things too. When I said "I'll definitely come again," they said with a smile "we'll be waiting," and I thought "this really is a good villa."
If you're looking for a villa on Irabu Island, I absolutely recommend Villaze. In a special environment surrounded by a lagoon, I want you to taste the luxury of a whole-building rental where you can spend it freely.
In the morning wake to birdsong, drink coffee while hearing the sound of leaping fish. At noon swim in the pool, nap in the hammock. In the evening fish in the lagoon, at night BBQ. Being able to spend such luxurious time is, I think, only at Villaze.
If you come to Irabu Island, I want you to definitely stay at Villaze. And I want you to taste the special time surrounded by a lagoon. It'll surely become a lifelong memory.
I'm wondering "when shall I come next?" too. I want to stay about a week and spend it even more slowly. Next time I want to come in winter and see the winter lagoon too. You can probably see completely different scenery depending on the season, so I think it's enjoyable however many times you come.
Villaze has become, for me, "a place I definitely want to come back to." Surrounded by nature, forgetting time, just spending it leisurely. There's no other place where you can taste such luxurious time, I think.
I hope you too will by all means spend special time surrounded by a lagoon at Villaze. It'll surely become an unforgettable memory in your life.
