Makiyama Promenade | A Subtropical Forest Walk to the Observatory (Irabu, Miyako)

Sponsored
Makiyama Promenade is a walking path laid out within Makiyama Park, at the foot of Makiyama Observatory standing on the highest rise of Irabu Island. Passing through a green tunnel where subtropical primeval forest grows thick, you can enjoy forest bathing wrapped in southern flowers such as hibiscus and the songs of wild birds. The observatory symbol is shaped after the migratory grey-faced buzzard with its wings spread, and the promenade is laid out as an easy-to-walk park path continuing from the car park to the observatory. Along the way and from the summit you can take in the main island of Miyako, Kurimajima, Ikemajima and the Irabu Ohashi Bridge, a free spot easy to drop by between drives. Within the park, a car park and Western-style toilets are provided, open at all times. It is an easy stroll course suited to travellers who want to leisurely savour the southern nature away from the bustle.

Visiting tips & what to bring

As it is a subtropical wooded zone, there are many insects such as mosquitoes and horseflies in summer, so insect repellent is recommended. The promenade is maintained, but after rain the stone paving and stairs become slippery, so footwear you are used to walking in is safer than sandals. While there is much shade, the sun is strong around the observatory, so prepare a hat, drinks and sunscreen. As caution against the habu snake typical of the subtropics, do not push carelessly into the grass or woods. The toilets are beside the observatory, so finishing up before your stroll gives peace of mind. During typhoons, bad weather or at night the footing is hard to see and dangerous, so avoid forced visits.

For families with small children

It is a paved, maintained short park path, a few minutes' walk from the car park to the observatory, so it is a relatively easy course to walk even with preschool children. However, there are sections with stairs, slopes and steps, so a pushchair is somewhat unsuitable and a baby carrier is safer. In summer do not forget insect repellent and hydration. The observatory has a fence but is high up, so do not take your eyes off children. As you can enjoy nature and a spectacular view in a short time, it suits a change of pace or a rest with children.
