Toriike Pond on the west coast of Shimojishima is a mystical natural spot designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. Two circular ponds, one large and one small, lie side by side; the south-west one is about 75m in diameter and about 40m deep, and the north-east one about 55m in diameter and about 25m deep. They connect to the open sea through an underwater cave below ground, and the water level and colour change moment by moment with the tides. It is a landform created by the collapse of a Ryukyu-limestone limestone cave, and the clear deep-navy surface is just like a dragon's eye. It is said to be a power spot where the dragons of the world gather, and is also a place where a stepchild legend remains. About a 5-minute walk along the promenade from the car park, proceeding along a subtropical path thick with adan, you arrive at the viewing point. Beyond viewing from land, the underwater is also known as an advanced point divers long for. Access is good too, about 15 minutes by car from the Irabu Ohashi Bridge.

Visiting tips & what to bring

The promenade is fitted with wooden railings, but there are spots where you can get right up to the edge of the pond, and the water is deep, so take great care against falling. Do not lean out over the railing, and it is important not to take your eyes off small children. The path thick with subtropical plants has many insects in summer, so insect repellent gives peace of mind. There is little shade, so preparing a hat and drinks is recommended. The footing is paved, but easy-to-walk footwear is safest. Since the 2016 typhoon, the promenade beyond Toriike Pond toward Nabezoko Pond has been closed. It is a sea area more for diving than snorkelling, and swimming in the pond is dangerous, so avoid entering the water on your own judgement. A car park, toilets and a kiosk are provided, convenient for a rest.

For families with small children

As you only walk the promenade about 5 minutes from the car park to the viewing point, it is an easy spot to visit even with children aged 0 to 6. However, the pond edge is deep with a risk of falling, so always hold children's hands and walk them away from the railing. A pushchair may be hard to push on unpaved sections. The provided toilets are a reassuring point. As you can enjoy a spectacular natural view in a short time, it suits a drive drop-by.
