Visiting tips & what to bring
There is no lifeguard or lifesaver stationed here, and no jellyfish-prevention net. All swimming is at your own responsibility. The offshore connects to the open sea and rip currents form easily, so do not swim out far and limit yourself to bathing in the shallows. On days with a southerly wind the waves rise, and jellyfish can be carried in on the wind. There is almost no shade on the sand, so bring a hat, sunscreen and drinks. On the rocks and shallows, marine shoes help to avoid cutting your feet on sea urchins or coral. The showers are cold water only (no hot water). For families with small children
There are many days when it is shallow with calm waves, and the white-sand beach is suitable even for families with children aged 0 to 6. It has free parking, toilets, showers and a kiosk, an environment where nappy changes and changing clothes are easy. However, there is no lifeguard, and on days with a south wind there is a risk of waves and rip currents, so guardians must always hold hands and let children play in the shallows. There is little shade, so take heat-protection measures with a tent or hat.FAQ
Q.Is parking at Toguchi-no-Hama free? How many spaces are there?
A.It is free. Car Park 1 on the east side has about 25 spaces, and Car Park 2 on the Blue Turtle side has about 15 spaces, both paved. They can get crowded during the summer season.
Q.Can I use toilets and showers?
A.Yes, free toilets and cold-water showers (no hot water) are provided on the east and west sides of the beach. The toilets are kept clean, and the east entrance is barrier-free.
Q.Can I snorkel? Can I rent equipment?
A.As it is shallow it is not suited to serious snorkelling, but you can enjoy tide-pool play. You can rent snorkel sets and parasols for a fee at Blue Turtle or Ishima Kanko Service on the east side.
Q.What is the access and travel time from Miyakojima?
A.About 30 minutes by car from Miyako Airport. Cross the Irabu Ohashi Bridge onto Irabu Island; it is located just before crossing to Shimojishima. Public transport is limited, so a hire car is recommended.
Q.What should I bring?
A.As there is little shade, a hat, sunscreen and drinks are essential. Marine shoes to protect your feet in the shallows, a change of clothes, and a leisure sheet or tent will help you spend a comfortable time.
