35END | A Quiet Hidden Beach at the Shimojishima Runway End (Miyako)

もう一つの絶景端
35END is a natural beach spreading out at the end of the "35" side of the Shimojishima Airport runway. Compared with the popular 17END on the opposite side of the runway, it is lesser-known and known as a hidden spot with few visitors. With a shallow cove-shaped landform surrounded by coral reef, white sand and coral spread across the seabed, and on a clear day near low tide you can enjoy snorkelling in the highly transparent sea known as Miyako Blue. Being able to watch aircraft taking off and landing up close is an appeal too. It is not developed as a tourist site, with no facilities at all such as toilets or a shop. There is no dedicated car park either, and you park on the road, so consideration is needed not to obstruct traffic. The currents are somewhat complex, and there are voices that the flow is stronger than at 17END, so take great care when entering the sea. It is recommended as a drop-by spot when touring Shimojishima by drive.

Visiting tips & what to bring

There are no toilets, shop, vending machines or shade at all, so always bring drinks and sun protection. As there is no dedicated car park and you park on the road, take care not to obstruct traffic around the airport. The footing has many rocks and coral, and at low tide the distance between the sea surface and the coral can be less than 1m, so wearing marine shoes gives peace of mind. Be considerate not to kick and damage the coral with fins. The currents are complex, and there are notes that the flow is stronger than at 17END, so do not overdo swimming or snorkelling, and do it at your own responsibility after checking the weather and tide level. There is no lifeguard.

For families with small children

With calm shallows spreading out and aircraft taking off and landing visible up close, it is an impressive spot for children. However, there are no toilets, shade or shop at all, and no nappy-change or breastfeeding facilities. The footing has many rocks and coral, and the current can be strong, so families with infants should keep to a short time at the water's edge and take care not to take their eyes off them. It is unsuitable for families who prioritise facilities, but for plane-watching it suits a short drop-by.

Q.What is a good time for snorkelling?

Q.Which is more recommended, 35END or 17END?

A.17END is well-known with more people, while 35END lets you enjoy a quiet, hidden atmosphere. On the other hand, there are voices that the flow is stronger than 17END, so it can be said to be for those seeking quiet or for advanced visitors.
