The cape and coastline facing the East China Sea in the north-west of Irabu Island make up Nishi-Kaigan Park and Hakuchozaki. From Funausagi Banata to Hakuchozaki, a promenade, rest areas and gazebos are laid out, and you can stroll while gazing at the dynamic scenery of white waves breaking on the rugged rocks. Its appeal is the magnificent view taking in Ikemajima and Nishihennazaki, and it is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument by Miyakojima City. The highly transparent sea is also known as a diving and snorkelling site, and in winter you can sometimes see manta rays passing below the cliffs. With almost no man-made structures to block the view, it is a hidden sunset spot where you can have the sun sinking into the horizon to yourself. Admission is free, with parking and toilets in place, and you can easily drop by mid-drive. It is a scenic park recommended for those who want to feel the nature of Irabu Island freely.

Visiting tips & what to bring

The rocks are uplifted coral reef, very uneven and slippery, so easy-to-walk trainers give peace of mind. Parts of the promenade have overgrown grass, and insect repellent is comfortable to have in summer. There is little tree shade, and outside the gazebos the direct sun is strong, so bring a hat and drinks. On windy days, watch for sea spray and gusts. If there is washed-up debris such as waste-oil balls on the shore, do not touch it. There are toilets but no shop, so it is recommended to prepare food and drink in advance.

For families with small children

With a promenade, parking and toilets in place, you can drive up and quickly enjoy the view, so it is an easy spot to drop by even with small children. However, there are many cliffs and rocks and places without railings, so always hold hands and do not take your eyes off children on the sea side. A pushchair is hard to push on the rocky promenade, so carrying is safer. There is little shade, so do not forget heat measures.
