Visiting tips & what to bring
The shop is within the Kuninaka village, with a small car park for 2 to 3 cars. When full it becomes roadside parking, so take care not to obstruct traffic. Being a popular product it may sell out, and a queue forms easily at snack time (around 14:00 to 16:00), so a morning visit or advance phone booking and set-aside is reassuring. The castella needs refrigeration and has a short best-before date, so be mindful of the carry-home time. Being a facility type, there are no particular cautions about outdoor equipment. For families with small children
It is a sweets shop easy to drop by even with small children. The gently sweet kokuto castella is perfect as a snack and suits family souvenir-choosing too. However, the interior is small and purchasing is mainly at the shopfront. As a long stay with a pushchair or in-shop eating space is hard to expect, savouring it at your hotel or on the beach after buying is recommended. The few parking spaces also make advance confirmation advisable for families coming by car.FAQ
Q.Is booking needed?
A.Booking is not essential, but as the daily output is limited and it can sell out, requesting a set-aside by phoning 0980-78-3917 in advance is recommended if you want to be sure of buying.
Q.Tell me the opening hours and closing days.
A.It opens from 10:00, until around 19:00 from April to September and around 18:00 from October to March as a guide. Sunday is the closing day. As times can change by day, a phone check before visiting is reassuring.
Q.Is there parking?
A.There is parking space for 2 to 3 cars in front of the shop. As the lanes within the village are narrow, please be considerate not to obstruct traffic with roadside parking when full.
Q.How much is the castella and does it keep?
A.The kokuto castella is 1,400 yen (approx US$9) per loaf. It needs refrigeration with a short best-before date (a few days to about 2 weeks), but is said to keep about a month frozen. Mind the carry-home time when making it a souvenir.
Q.What about access and less-crowded times?
A.About 5 to 10 minutes by car from Shimojishima Airport, within the Kuninaka village. As a queue forms easily at the 14:00 to 16:00 snack time, a morning visit is recommended for those who want to buy at leisure.
