NaNa CAFE is a guesthouse-adjoining hideaway cafe in Maezato-soe in the Sarahama area of Irabu Island. Marked by a wall painted with a large whale, its appeal is the retro, warm interior and the raised tatami seating. Its lunch using plenty of Miyakojima-produced ingredients and island vegetables is well-regarded, where you can enjoy a Miyako-beef hamburg set meal and five kinds of hot sandwiches. At cafe time there are drinks and smoothies using Miyakojima fruit, shaved ice and homemade cakes, and it is characterised by having gluten-free and vegan menu items too. It is open Monday to Saturday 11:30 to 15:30 (lunch L.O. 14:00, cafe L.O. 15:00), closed Sunday and the 3rd Saturday. It accepts cashless payment, and there is free parking in front of the shop. Easy to drop by between Sarahama Port and a village stroll, it is a shop where you can savour leisurely island time.

Visiting tips & what to bring

As it is an indoor cafe, you can use it regardless of the weather. Located within the Sarahama village with many narrow slopes and winding lanes, when visiting by car it is reassuring to use the free parking in front of the shop. Easy-to-walk footwear is recommended. Besides Sunday and 3rd-Saturday closing, there are temporary closures, so confirming the operating status on the official Instagram before visiting is reliable. Lunch may end once sold out.

For families with small children

With raised tatami seating where you can relax with shoes off, it suits families with children aged 0 to 6. With gluten-free and vegan menu items too, it is reassuring for families with children who worry about allergies. There are many gently seasoned dishes using island vegetables, and sharing is easy. Being indoors so you can spend time without worrying about the weather is a help for families too. With a pushchair, take care of the slopes within the village.
